Your photos are one of the few things from your wedding day that you keep forever. That is why recent headlines about photography companies that took deposits and did not deliver hit couples so hard. The good news: a handful of simple checks before you sign can protect both your money and your memories.
What the recent news reported
In early October 2026, a North Carolina court entered a default judgment of about $1.7 million against a Raleigh wedding photography company and its owners, according to ABC11 and PetaPixel. Roughly $600,000 was restitution for customers and about $1.1 million was civil penalties. The order also requires the company to provide couples with photos and videos from their wedding days. The state attorney general's office, which brought the case, said the fight is "far from over" and that it is still tracing where customers' money went. These are allegations and findings in one case, and whether couples actually get paid or receive their photos remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Earlier this year, Boston.com reported that Yours Truly Media, a California-based company that matched couples with local photographers, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on February 26, 2026. The creditors' list included 478 couples from more than 10 states, with more than 100 in Massachusetts.
Most photographers are reliable professionals. But these stories show what can go wrong, so it is worth spending an hour on due diligence before you hand over a deposit.
Know who you are actually hiring
Some companies act as booking agencies: you sign with the company, and a different photographer shows up on the day. That is not automatically a problem, but you should know it going in. Ask:
- Who exactly will photograph my wedding, and can I see a full gallery from a recent event of theirs (not just highlights)?
- If that person is unavailable, who is the backup and how is the replacement chosen?
- Is the contract with the photographer directly or with a booking company?
Read the contract like it matters (because it does)
A good photography contract is specific. Look for:
- Dates and hours: the exact date, start and end times, and what overtime costs.
- Deliverables: number of edited images, and whether video is included.
- Delivery deadline: a written timeframe for your gallery, such as "within 8 weeks."
- Backup and storage: how long they keep your files after delivery, and whether they shoot to dual memory cards.
- Cancellation and refund terms: what happens if the photographer cancels or goes out of business.
- Payment schedule: deposit amount, milestone payments, and a final balance that is not due until close to the day.

Check the business, not just the portfolio
Beautiful photos are the easy part. Also check:
- Reviews in several places (not only the vendor's own site), and read the middling ones.
- Complaint history with your state attorney general's consumer office or the Better Business Bureau. In the US, a quick search of the attorney general's consumer complaints page can tell you a lot.
- A real business presence: a business address, a consistent name on the contract and payment account, and a phone number that gets answered.
- Past couples: ask for two recent references, then actually contact them.
Pay in a way that protects you
- Pay deposits by credit card where possible, since card issuers typically offer dispute rights that cash, checks and some payment apps may not.
- Avoid paying the full amount far in advance.
- Keep receipts and every email in one folder.
- Be cautious if someone pressures you to book today or offers a big discount for paying in full up front.
Make sure your photos survive the day
Even with a trustworthy photographer, things can go wrong, such as lost gear. News outlets have also reported a thief stealing camera equipment holding a couple's wedding photos. Reduce your risk:
- Ask whether they shoot to two memory cards at once and back up the same night.
- Ask for a delivery timeline for a first batch of sneak peeks.
- Ask a few trusted guests to share their phone photos in one shared album.
- Download your final gallery as soon as it arrives and store it in two places.

FAQ
How much deposit is normal for a wedding photographer? It varies widely by market and package, so compare quotes. What matters is that the deposit and payment schedule are written into the contract.
What if my photographer cancels or disappears? Contact them in writing, review your contract's refund terms, and consider a dispute with your card issuer. You can also file a complaint with your state attorney general's consumer protection office.
Is a booking agency worse than hiring a photographer directly? Not necessarily, but you should know who will shoot your day and what happens if they cannot attend.
Should I buy wedding insurance? It can help cover vendor no-shows or cancellations depending on the policy. Read exactly what is and is not covered.
