Just Engaged? Your First 30 Days Checklist (In the Right Order)

There's a video going around this month that sums up the first hour of an engagement better than any planning guide could.

At sunset on Point Mugu State Beach in Malibu, Daniel Sanchez proposed to Blanca Carcamo. Neither of them knew they were being filmed. A stranger named Brandee Evans had been up on the cliff, where she ran into Blanca's father hiding behind her car — he told her his daughter was about to get engaged. So Evans went down to the beach, recorded the whole thing, and then posted it on every platform she could, hoping the couple would find it. According to CBS Los Angeles, the clip reached nearly 3 million views, it found the couple, and they've since invited Evans to the wedding.

That's the fun part of getting engaged: the moment, the people who cheer, the phone that won't stop buzzing. The less fun part arrives about 48 hours later, when the questions start. When's the date? Where? Am I invited? Can I bring someone?

If you got engaged this fall — or you're expecting a ring over the holidays — you're in good company. The Knot's 2025 Real Engagements & Weddings Survey found that December is still the most popular month to get engaged, and Christmas Day the most popular single day (summary via The Plumb Club). It's also why the #2027wedding tag is already busy on TikTok: per Toklytics, the videos it tracks under that hashtag have pulled in 18.8 million views.

So here's what to actually do with your first 30 days, in order. Not a 12-month plan. Just the next four weeks.

Days 1–3: Enjoy it (seriously, that's the task)

The single best piece of advice for the newly engaged is the one nobody follows: don't plan anything yet.

You'll never get these few days back. Sit with it. Go out to dinner. Look at the ring in different lighting. Tell the story to each other until you both remember it the same way.

What you should do in the first 72 hours:

• Tell the inner circle personally, before social media. Parents, siblings, grandparents, best friends. A phone call or FaceTime, not a group text. Nobody who matters to you should find out from an Instagram post.
• Agree on what you'll say when people ask "When's the wedding?" "We're just enjoying being engaged — we'll let you know!" is a complete answer. Having a shared line saves you from one of you saying "probably next fall" while the other says "maybe 2028."
• Write down the proposal story. Five minutes in your notes app. Who said what, what the weather was doing, who cried first. You'll want it for the toasts, the website, and yourselves.
• Screenshot and save every photo and video. If someone else filmed it, ask for the original file, not the compressed version from the group chat.

Days 4–7: Protect the ring

This is the boring step everyone skips, and it's the one that matters most if something goes wrong.

• Get it sized. A ring that's even slightly loose can slip off in cold water or when your hands shrink in winter weather. Most jewelers resize in one to two weeks.
• Get an appraisal or keep the receipt somewhere safe. You'll need proof of value to insure it.
• Insure it. In the US and Canada that usually means adding a scheduled personal property rider (sometimes called a "floater") to your homeowners or renters policy, or buying a standalone jewelry policy. In the UK, check whether your home contents insurance covers valuables away from home — many standard policies don't unless you list the item. Ask what's covered: loss, theft, damage, and whether "mysterious disappearance" (you just can't find it) counts.
• Photograph it. Close-ups from a few angles, plus the appraisal document. Store both in the cloud.

It takes an afternoon. Do it before the first holiday party where everyone wants to try it on.

Week 2: Have the three big conversations

Before you book a single vendor or open a single Pinterest board, the two of you need rough answers to three questions. Not final answers — rough ones.

1. Roughly when?

The Knot's survey puts the average engagement at 15 months. That's a useful baseline, not a rule. Shorter engagements work well for small weddings and courthouse-plus-dinner celebrations; longer ones give you more venue options and more time to save. Pick a season and a year, not an exact date. "Fall 2027" is enough for now.

2. Roughly how big?

Guest count drives almost everything else: venue size, catering, budget, even which cities are realistic. You don't need a list yet. You need to know whether you're picturing 40 people, 120, or 250. If you each write a number down separately and compare, you'll learn a lot very quickly. Our guest list etiquette guide is useful once you're ready to turn that number into names.

3. Roughly how much — and who's paying?

This is the awkward one, so do it early. Will either set of parents contribute? Are you paying entirely yourselves? What's the most you'd spend without resenting it in five years? If you have no idea what things cost, read the real cost of a wedding in 2026 together before this conversation, so you're both working from the same numbers.

Week 3: Start the guest list draft and talk to families

Now you have a season, a size and a budget range. Time to involve other people — carefully.

• Start a shared guest list spreadsheet. Columns for name, side, relationship, household (couples and families count as one invitation), and an email or phone number. You'll be grateful for the contact details later.
• Ask each family for their "must invite" names, with a number attached. "We have about 20 spots for your side" is much easier than "Who do you want to invite?"
• Don't promise anyone a bridal party spot yet. It's tempting in the champagne glow. Wait until you know the size of the wedding.
• Don't verbally invite anyone. "You'll obviously be there!" said to a coworker in October becomes a real problem in March when you've capped the list at 80.

Week 4: Lock the date window and tell everyone once

By the end of the month, many couples are ready to tour a few venues or at least shortlist some. You don't need to book anything in the first 30 days. But once you have a date window — or an actual date — the most useful thing you can do is put all the basic information in one place.

This is the step that ends the "So when's the wedding?" texts. Instead of answering the same five questions in seven group chats, you send one link.

A simple save-the-date page or wedding website in month one can be small. It just needs:

• Your names and the date (or "Fall 2027 — details coming soon")
• The city or venue, if you know it
• A line about whether the guest list is final yet
• Travel notes if many guests will be flying in
• Your proposal story and a photo or two

You can add RSVPs, schedule, and travel details later as decisions get made. Tools like Wedflip let you publish a basic page now and edit and republish it whenever plans change, which is exactly what an early-stage wedding needs.

• Saved original photos and videos
• Ring sized
• Ring appraised and receipt filed
• Ring insured (rider, floater or standalone policy)

Once that list is done, you've finished the "just engaged" stage. From here, our 12-month wedding planning timeline takes over, month by month.

What can wait (really)

A lot of the pressure in month one comes from social media, not from your actual timeline. If you've been saving checklist carousels on TikTok or Lemon8, it's easy to feel behind by week two. You're not. All of these can wait until month two or later:

• Dress and suit shopping
• Choosing a wedding party
• Engagement photos (unless you want them for the save-the-date)
• Registry
• Colors, florals and themes
• Wedding favors, signage, anything with a font choice

The only thing with a real deadline in the first month is protecting the ring. Everything else is just order.

FAQ

How soon after getting engaged should we set a date?

There's no fixed rule. Most couples agree on a rough season within the first few weeks, then pick an exact date once they've checked venue availability. Committing to a date before you've seen a venue usually means compromising on the venue.

Should we post on social media right away?

Only after everyone close to you has heard it directly. Once they have, post whenever you like — just expect your comments and DMs to fill up with "When's the wedding?" That's a good moment to have a short answer ready, or a link.

When should we send save-the-dates?

Formal save-the-dates usually go out six to eight months before the wedding, and earlier for destination weddings. But an online save-the-date page can go up much sooner, even with just the season and city, and grow as you decide things.

Do we need to insure the ring if it's not expensive?

If losing it would upset you or cost you more than your insurance deductible to replace, yes. A rider on a renters policy is often inexpensive, but it varies by insurer and ring value, so get a quote rather than guessing.

The bottom line

The first 30 days aren't for planning a wedding. They're for enjoying the engagement, protecting the ring, and getting the two of you on the same page before anyone else has an opinion. Do those things in order and the rest of the planning starts from a calm place instead of a panicked one.

And when the questions start piling up, answer them once. Start your save-the-date page on Wedflip — pick one of the templates, add your names, the date window and your story, and send one link instead of fifty replies. It starts with a free 30-day trial, and if you upgrade, couples pay once with no subscription; the code WEDSEASON30 takes 30% off any paid plan on the pricing page.

Congratulations, by the way. Go enjoy it.
