If your Pinterest board is suddenly full of doodled place cards, mismatched chairs and tiny surprises tucked into every corner, you're not imagining it. Whimsy is having a moment. Bridebook's 2027 trend forecast calls it the hero trend and says it has replaced "timeless" as the industry's word of the moment.
The good news: whimsy is less about spending more and more about choosing details that feel like the two of you. Here's what the forecast actually says, and how to borrow the idea without losing your budget (or your sanity).
What the data says about whimsy
According to Bridebook's Wedding Trends 2027 forecast, Pinterest searches for "whimsy weddings" are up 1,000% year on year. Searches for "whimsy doodles" are up 1,500% on Pinterest, and more than 20,000 people searched "wedding doodles" in the last month, the same report says. Bridebook's Head of Brand, Zoe Burke, describes whimsy as "fundamentally just joy in its purest form."
Two things are worth noticing. First, whimsy isn't a colour palette or a dress silhouette. Bridebook describes it as a mindset built on small, personal details. Second, the forecast is UK-focused, so if you're planning in the US or Canada, treat it as a signal of where the mood is heading, not a rulebook.
Whimsy is about details, not décor budgets
The easiest way to get this wrong is to treat whimsy as a shopping list. Instead, think of it as a filter: does this make our guests smile? A few ideas that fit:
- Hand-drawn touches. Doodled menus, illustrated table numbers or a sketch of your venue on the welcome sign. A friend with a fine-tip pen can do more than a rented backdrop.
- Little surprises. A tiny note under each napkin, a "story behind the seating" card, or a playful name for each table.
- Mismatch on purpose. Vintage chairs, mixed glassware and single stems in odd bottles feel intentional when the colours repeat.
- Food with a wink. A dessert table with the childhood treat you both love beats a generic tower.
- Personal signage. Names for tables based on places you've been, jokes only your people will get.
Keep the colours calm
The same report notes that chartreuse and burgundy dominate WeddingTok, but UK searches for "chartreuse wedding" return virtually zero volume. In other words, what goes viral on a short video isn't always what couples actually plan. If you love a bold colour, use it in small hits (napkins, ribbon, a bar sign) and let the rest stay soft so photos don't date quickly.

A shorter engagement means fewer, better choices
Bridebook's UK Wedding Report, cited in the forecast, shows a fifth of couples marry within 12 months of getting engaged, against an average engagement of around 26 months. Bridebook links that shorter timeline to the focus on small, personal details. Less time means you can't do everything, so choose three or four whimsical moments and do them well rather than ten half-finished ones.
Make it work on the day
Whimsy falls apart when the logistics aren't solid. A few guardrails:
- Assign an owner for every handmade element. Someone needs to set out the doodled place cards, and it shouldn't be you.
- Do a mock table. Set up one place setting two weeks out, photograph it and edit before you make 120 of anything.
- Brief your vendors early. Florists, caterers and rental companies need to know what's playful and what's non-negotiable.
- Keep a plain backup. If the handmade signs don't arrive, a simple printed version should be ready.
Your whimsy checklist
- ☐ Pick one word that describes your vibe ("joyful", "storybook", "cosy")
- ☐ Choose 3-4 whimsical moments, not 10
- ☐ Decide which element is hand-drawn or handmade, and who is making it
- ☐ Limit bold colours to two accents
- ☐ Order one sample of anything you'll make in bulk
- ☐ Tell vendors about the personal details before the final walkthrough
- ☐ Put the playful details on your wedding website so guests are in on the fun
Let guests in on the joke
Whimsy starts before the day. A site that looks like the two of you sets the tone: your story, your jokes and a clear schedule in one place. On Wedflip you can pick from 160+ designer templates (including envelope intros that open like a real invitation), and when you edit a detail, every guest opening your link sees the update. It's a quick way to preview the mood before the day, and it has a 30-day free trial. Plus is a $15 one-time upgrade and Pro is $29 one-time, with no subscriptions.

FAQ
Is whimsy just for casual weddings? No. Bridebook describes whimsy as a mindset built on small, personal details rather than a particular formality level. A black-tie evening can include a hand-drawn menu.
How do I avoid it looking cluttered? Pick a limited palette and repeat it. Choose a few standout details and keep everything else simple.
Should I follow the trend if I prefer classic? You don't have to. Trend forecasts show where searches are heading, not what you should do. If one doodled touch feels like you, that's plenty.
Can I do this on a small budget? Yes. Handwritten or hand-drawn elements, personal notes and mixed secondhand pieces are often cheaper than matching rentals.
