Rowan and Isolde met at the Portland Botanical Garden during a summer exhibition of pressed-plant illustrations. Rowan was there to scout the garden's infrastructure for a landscape redesign bid. Isolde had three pieces in the show.

He asked her about the fern specimen in the corner. She asked him why he kept measuring the retaining walls with his eyes. They talked until the gallery closed, then stood outside for another hour.
